Weekend Garden ~ Starfruit

Weekend Garden features ‘Star Fruit’ (Carambola). Our backyard starfruit tree is full of fruits and my 7 year old is on a fruit-plucking spree. Just plucking, mind you, since the fruits are within his reach. He won’t eat it.

Since June the tree has been bearing good fruit.

The anti-oxidant rich fruit starts out with a green color and ripens to a yellow shade. It can be eaten both at the green and yellow stages.

Carambola aka Starfruit

When sliced a perfect star is formed. Crunchy and juicy with a slightly tart and sweet flavor. I like it raw, sometimes with a sprinkling of chilli pwd.

Note: I’ve learnt that people with kidney ailments should avoid starfruit.

I too have this in my yard and every morning I would wake up to see the tree full of parrots pecking on the soft seeds of star fruit and the ground below will be full of fruit flesh. star fruit works well when you have a soar throat. Just put a few pieces in a muslin cloth and squeeze out the juice.you can have this with honey or just a pinch of salt. This clears the phlegm from the throat.
