Sabja lemonade or sweet basil seeds lemonade is one of the healthiest summer drinks. Sabja seeds are basically sweet basil seeds that have a nice crunchy texture. The scientific name is Ocimum basilicum. In India, they are popular as sabja or falooda seeds. Another popular name is tukmaria and sabja seeds in telugu is known as sabja ginjalu. These healthy seeds are from maruwa or rudra jada plant of the tulsi family and should not be mistaken for holy basil or tulsi.

The health benefits of sabja seeds are tremendous. It is antioxidant rich, cools the body, aids digestion, cures constipation, cold, skin infections and respiratory disorders. For excessive pitta dosha one can consume sabja seeds to reduce body heat. It has many more medicinal values according to Ayurvedic texts. Sabja seeds when soaked in water, appear like tapioca on swelling, crunchy on bite with a bland flavor. You can add the bloomed seeds to almost any drink, juice or dessert of your choice. The famous dessert, falooda, is incomplete without the addition of sabja.

The next time you make shikanji or lemonade, nannari sharbat, bel ka sharbat, rooh afza lemonade or any sharbat, do add a heaped tbsp of bloomed sabja as garnish. It is cooling to the body and protects us from intense heat. Sabja lemonade recipe is nothing but addition of sabja seeds to your basic nimbu pani aka lemonade.

Follow the instructions below to make sabja lemonade

 Main Ingredients:

  •  sabja seeds
  •   lemon

 Ingredients

  •   Lemon - 1, large
  •   Sugar - 2 tbsps (dissolve in 1/4 cup warm water) OR honey
  •   Salt - pinch
  •   Black salt - 1/2 tsp (optional)
  •   Sabja seeds - 1 tbsp (sweet basil seeds)
  •   Water - 600 ml

Method for making Sabja Lemonade

Clean the sabja seeds of any grits or stones and wash the seeds. In a bowl, add 1/3 cup luke warm water and the washed and drained seeds. Allow the seeds to bloom. They will begin to swell within 15-30 mts of soaking. When you observe a trasparent jelly like coating over the seed, they are ready for use.
In a bowl, add juice of one lemon, sugar syrup, salt and black salt. Mix well. Add water and sabja seeds along with any left over water. Mix well.
Pour into serving glasses, add ice cubes and serve.

Tips

  •   You can flavor the lemonade with mint leaves, khus syrup or rose syrup.
  •   You can add soaked sabja to nannari, bel ka sharbat or any drink/fruit juice of your choice.
  •   You can add to sweet and unsweetened lassi also.

      You should be able to find them in a few Kirana stores. Stores that sell ayurvedic medicines should have them. They are also known as sweet basil seeds.

        Thank you! I actually found falooda seeds in a super market yesterday. Are they the same as the ones you used here? They look similar but they are a tad bit long unlike the round shapes the sabja seeds you have appear to be. Also, while trying to wash them they started to swell and became like one big sticky jelly.

          I used the desi variety of seeds from Rudrajada plant. Few seeds are small while some are slightly bigger in size. Add more water and they will not form a sticky jelly.

        Btw they didn’t also settle to the bottom but floated instead. Wondering if I have to soak for a little bit longer. Any idea? Thanks.
