Simple & Quick Tomato Rice
I have many of you writing in requesting for kid friendly recipes and regular updates at Kids Zone. Yes, I do want to update both the blogs on a regular basis. My karigar (artisan) is back after a long break and I spend quite some time creating designs to be embroidered on clothes. Trying my best to juggle between different chores and get the most out of 24 hours. ![]()
One pot dishes are my quick fix meals on busy days. I made Tomato rice today. Simple recipe with minimal spices. The sweet tart juices of tomato are beautifully absorbed by the rice yielding a subtly spiced dish that was well-loved by my family. Use nice red juicy tomatoes when trying this recipe.
Simple Tomato Rice
Prep & Cooking: 30 mts
Serves 4-5 persons
.
1 cup raw rice
8-10 curry leaves
8 cloves (do not skimp on cloves)
1″ cinnamon stick
2 cardamoms
1 large onion, finely sliced
3 ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
3 green chillis, slit lengthwise
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
4-5 pudina leaves
1/2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
salt to taste
1 tbsp oil + 1/4 tbsp ghee
1 Heat oil+ghee in a vessel or pressure cooker, add the curry leaves, sliced onions, green chillis, cloves, cinnamon and cardamoms and stir fry for 5 mts. Add ginger garlic paste and saute for 2-3 mts.
2 Add chopped tomatoes, pudina and coriander leaves to the sauteed onions and combine. Add salt to taste and combine well. Cook for 6-7 mts.
3 Reduce heat, add the raw rice, combine, saute for 3 mts. Add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce flame and cook till rice is done. If using pressure cooker, cook rice upto 3 whistles.
4 Serve hot with any curry of your choice or with just pickle, yogurt and appadam.

one pot rice dishes are my favorite too and I simply love tomato rice. kinda comfort food for me. this looks mouthwatering!!! belated happy diwali Sailu
Hi Sailu,
My kids love Tomato Rice too.
What I do is saute rice like I would for any fried rice/pulao and then instead of water add tomato juice with a couple of spoons of tomato paste.
It comes out looking great and tastes super.
Hope you had a great Diwali with your family.
Hi thanks for the yummy recipe. I try a lot of recipes from your site and my family loves them. I tried this recipe today but it ended up very sticky. I did not use a pressure cooker either. Do you have any suggestions. Do let me know. Thank you!
Probably you should add less water than what you used to prepare the recipe. Saute the rice along with the rest of the ingredients well. Also use enough oil while preparing rice dishes, it makes it less sticky. Sometimes the type of rice used also makes a difference.
OMG! My mother used to make tomato rice exactly like this! Thanks for posting this wonderful recipe!!
sailu garu,
thanks for the recipe. my question may be litte out of context, but i remember u mentioning about making your chilli powder by adding some other ingredients. i want to make that, but havn’t been able to locate the recipe, would you please share it.
thanks in advance.

I am yet to blog the masala chilli pwd that I use in my blog, Madhu garu. Will blog it sometime.
I make them almost the same without the curry leaves. Looks very delicious and the pic looks good too.
Thanks for sharing the recipe!!
Hi dear,
Love this rice, I make something like this but with few changes. I’m new to blogging world. Like your blog…..it’s interesting that u’ve many hobbies. I also like to do various things. Do visit my blog sometime.
hi sailu, why we need to add 8 cloves? wont be very strong while we eat?
Whole cloves will not yield as strong a flavor as ground ones, Krithiga. The key ingredient to tomato rice is clove . It will not be strong at all. Remove the cloves at the time of serving since biting into one of them will not be a good experience.
Sailaja,
This is my all time recipe superhit with my kids specially. Its good for their lunch box too. But i dont saute the rice. Instead add it to boiling water.
Hi Sailu,
yesterday i made tomato rice exactly by this method.
No change, good in taste. What a coincidence!!!
Thank you Sailu, Take care, Bye,…

One pot meal, perfect after the fancy diwali snacks that we all have had.
Simple and easy recipe.I am in for making this one.
Hi Sailu,
Can we make this recipe with electric rice cooker instead of pressure cooker? After Step 2, can we transfer the mixture to the electric cooker which contains rice with water? Can we do that?
Thanks
Aparna
Yes, you can transfer contents to the electric rice cooker at the time of adding water.
Hi Sailugaru,
Excellent. The way you present a dish is awesome. I prepare this dish with basmathi rice and garnish with kaju. Or Kaju can be added before onions& chillies, saute for a minute. Don’t call it a simple dish. It’s a big hit with all my friends during parties. It’s different than other pulavs& Biryanies.. Can be Served with chicken gravy curry and onion raita.
Thanks again
Hi Sailu,
Very Happy Deepavali to u n ur family… I make tomato rice similar to this recipe with exception that I do not use curry leaves and pudina but use green peas and little bit of garam masala pwdr. But will definitely try this recipe next time…Also, I use more cloves like u… as u rightly said, cloves enhance taste of tomato rice….
hi sailu,
could u pls tell me what kind of rice u used in this recipe?….
thanks and regards,
I use Basmati. You can use any type of rice.
Hi Sailu garu, can i use tomato puree instead of tomato pieces?
Chopped tomato is best but you could use a cup of tomato puree for the above recipe.
Dear Sailu garu,
just made the tomato rice…came amazingly well. Wish I made more of it!! Thanks for the easy and quick recipe.
